The Cameo Picturehouse is situated in Tollcross, first opening in 1914 as the Kings Cinema. Around that time, the original screen was mirrored, ‘the first of its kind in Scotland – and there were 673 seats in an auditorium showing silent films with orchestral accompaniment.’
In 1949 The Kings Cinema was then refurbished, changing its name to The Cameo, as we know it today.
Now, it is owned by Picturehouse who run a network of cinemas around the UK. They aim for each of their establishments to be ‘distinct, full of personality and run by welcoming and attentive staff.’
The Cameo Picturehosue has three screen rooms however, the largest is designed in a grand ‘Edwardian’ style, taking cinema lovers back in time. Inside the Cameo, there is also a dog friendly bar where children and babies are welcome until 8pm. The bar sells a wide range of drinks, hot snacks, nibbles and cakes.

They also aim to cater to both hard of hearing and the visually impaired as well as hold monthly Dementia friendly screenings.
Customers can book tickets to films through their website: https://www.picturehouses.com/cinema/the-cameo where they can also find additional information on what’s on, venue hire, accessibility and news.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, all Picturehouse cinemas have closed their doors from Friday 9th October 2020 until further notice.
